Updating McAfee Dat Files on XP Systems

    Locked

    by jan.graves ·

I have a problem with some XP systems not updating McAfee VirusScan dat files. Systems that came in with the original version of XP, even though they currently have all Windows patches on them will update the dats, even if the user does not have Admin authority.

Systems which were delivered with XP SP1 on them will not update the dats, unless the user has Admin rights. I do not want all users to have Admin rights, but I do want to keep my virus files up to date!

Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you solve it?

    Thanks in advance.

Might wants to try allowing users admin rights over their local machine (not domain)

Additional Information – I work in an educational environment and we do not want the students to be able to add/remove programs on the computers. So, giving them Admin rights to their local system is not an option.

      Hey,

Are you getting any specific error messages? Check Event Viewer. We use McAfee and are not having any problems like this.

It is possible that they don’t have enough rights on the AV folder. You could check the rights on the folder and bump them up.

        Hey,

Here in some info from McAfee.

Folder permissions on the c:\program files\common files\Network Associates folder do not allow for the user to write to.

        Solution 1:
Ensure the folder permissions on the install locations will allow the user to have write access.

By default NetShield installs to the following folders:
        c:\program files\Network Associates\netshield 2000
        c:\program files\common files\Network Associates

It really looks like it must be a rights issue with one of the files or folders.

        Thanx

        Hey,

Do you have backup option for backing up DAT files turned on? We do not use this option. Try disabling it as a test and see if that changes anything.

        Thanx

More Information on this problem – My users are logging in to a Novell Netware network. The McAfee software resides on their local hard drive. The users have all rights to the McAfee folder. The error which is received is:
Unable to backup existing file. Not enough rights.

There is no indication as to what the file needs to be backuped up.

I have tried installing the software signed on as the XP Admin user. A standard user still cannot update the dat files.
