    Delivery Status Notification (Delay)

    Locked

    by computer geek ·

When sending to only one domain (@aol.com), our Exchange Server 2003 Ent. Edition will send the following message to the sender:

    Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Delay)

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed

I have attempted to send to my private aol account and have not yet received the notification from my email system, but also have not received the test email at my aol account either.
Our delay is set to the default (12 hours). Other external addresses receive their mail from our exchange server without any problems. Any suggestions?

You are getting that message because the aol server is not responding to your exchange server. This could be that the server is overloaded or just down temporarly.

If this is a new problem then it will probably resolve itself when aol fixes their problem.

If this is an ongoing problem, AOL may have changed its MX record and your DNS server has not updated. Thereby, you may be sending to the wrong address.

Do an Nslookup against your external dns server and match it with a nslookup from a website such as http://www.mob.net/~ted/tools/mx.php3.

If they differ have your DNS admin update the records.

Change in information. Our user now says there is one other address that this is happening to as well. In addition I was able to email my AOL account from another outgoing mail server, without any issue.

AOL routinely checks for reverse DNS (PTR) entries and rejects email from servers where no PTR record is found. It’s part of their anti-spam effort. Check your DNS server(s) (or check with your ISP if they are hosting your public DNS zone) and make sure that the PTR record is in place for your email server.

      Hope this helps!

Haven’t had a chance to test whether this is really the issue or not, but it does seem to show the correct characteristics. Just want to clean house so closing the question assuming this will resolve the issue.

      Has AOL blacklisted you?

this is most likely a DNS issue.

Curlergirl is right that the ptr record may be a problem. AOL is not the only one who does this.

I would still make sure that My DNS has the same MX record as other DNS servers.

      Good luck

We had that happen to all email going to AOL as well. Turns out that our ISP did not have a reverse DNS entry for our server and AOL refused the email as a result. Hope this helps.
