    McAfee Blue Screens

    Locked

    by russell ·

I recently joined TechRepublic (glad to be aboard) and read Ed Bott’s excellent Virus Buster column from August.

One of the TR contributors (jdroland) writes: “I run McAfee…. the new dat files will [sometimes] blue-screen some 95/98 clients,…. but after you figure out those types of errors, it runs pretty smoothly…”

We bought 5500 licenses for McAfee for our WAN (a three year deal with 14 months to go) and many of my technology directors are complaining of blue screen fatal exception errors after installing McAfee or updates. I personally installed the latest McAfee workstation version on 20 new Dell Optiplexes and about half immediately began displaying the blue screen of death.

I would like to ask jdroland or others what they have done to remedy this problem. I didn’t have control over the decision to buy this product and have experienced other problems with McAfee in the past. Personally I’m a Symantec user on my personal machines with no problems. But I am open to solutions for McAfee.

Any ideas appreciated…we had a slightly disgruntled bunch of IT coordinators in our last meeting as I surveyed them for problems with the AV deployment.

    All the best,

I’ve noted that on some machines, if you’re using Management Edition, the client for that will blue screen machines.

        Distribution of McAfee AV

The individual networks on the WAN all have ftp access to the McAfee executable downloads and updates so they are managing their own system. Basically most sites (about 51 in all) have 100 to 200 PCs and they manually install from burned CDs andset the clients up for scheduled weekly updates. The Novell or NT/Novell mixed systems seem to be having the most problems.
