Are you using a boot disk? If you are not, then you need to make yourself one off of a friends computer that is running Windows 98, OR you can go to bootdisk.com and download one. If you are using a bootdisk and it is still doing this, then you will have to make another one. Once you have made the bootdisk then hold down the F8 key after the computer starts but before you get to the windows screen, if the computer beeps while you are holding down the key you just have pressed it to soon. Keep trying to press it until gives you a DOS looking screen with a couple of choices such as normal start up with cd support, startup without cd support etc….try picking the normal, if that doesn’t start it correctly, restart the computer again and this time pick the one without cd support. One of the choices will work and get you to the welcome screen where you can use the diagnostic tools. If you need any other help drop me an email at [email protected]…hope this helps!

i would attempt to boot in ‘safe mode’. to do this, reboot the pc and, right away, while the black screen is showing, tap (don’t hold down) the f8 function key. (top row of keys on your keyboard). keep on tapping and, if successful, a boot menu willappear. select Safe Mode from the list. if windows will come up this way, see if setting your video driver to Standard VGA will allow rebooting normally (although the desktop colors and resolution will look odd).
if that works, you’ve got a video driver (or maybe card) problem…try replacing one or both…hope this helps

      hello,
there is a good chance that you may have an “nyb” virus in your boot sector.try to get an antivirus boot disk and boot the computer with the disk in.
norton has a disk that pretty easily removes “nyb”
viruses. you may also want to try to boot the computer and hold down the “f8 key” prior to the windowss 98 logo appearing on the screen. choose the “step by step ” option in the menu that comes up and then you must confirm each step the computer is going through while booting up. pay very close attention to which steps clearly load. you can determine which command is causing the hangups because that is the command that will not load. you may then have to modify the command in the: 1. config.sys
      2. autoexec.bat
      3. start up menu
      by editing them

Do you have enough answers yet? 🙂
It’s also a good chance that you have a device or program causing the problem
Booting into safe mode is your first step, if this works, you need to run msconfig (Start>Run>msconfig) this is a diagnostic utility that will help track down the problem program/device. Check Selective startup, and uncheck all five options (config.sys, autoexec.bat, system.ini, win.ini, and startup) Reboot. If the system boots up, go back into msconfig and start putting each option back in, one at a time…reboot after each option is put back in. Do this until the system hangs on startup again, this will identify which option contains the problem device/program, then you’ll have the fun job of finding the specific device/program that is causing the hang..within msconfig you can pick each device/program that loads within each option, try unchecking them one at a time, two at a time, 10 at a time, whatever, until you find your problem…
      Good Luck!

      All worthy answers….

You cna also download (fomr most download sites) a program called bootvis.exe. This little program I used on my freshly install 98SE system. My system was taking several minutes to boot. This program will tell you EVERYTHING (as far as I know) that is starting on your system (and I am not just talking about Windows files either) and how long it runs for.
Turns out that my NIC was taking 67.89 seconds to load. Once I loaded the correct drivers, it took 4.47s.
Find this program, install, read the log file it creates, and see what is taking up the boot time (and remember, the culprit may not be in Windows itself).

I had the same problem, as I dont have access to another computer to help me with the answers.
      I just reformatted the computer!
The problem that caused mine was the grahpic drivers, I believe.
