MSP Best Practices: Network Switch and Router Deployment Checklist
No managed services provider should lock itself out of the very network switches or routers it deploys, yet such accidents occur. Network switches have become increasingly complex and sometimes route virtual local area network traffic, while routers power an ever-expanding smorgasbord of filters and services. As a result, it’s easier than ever to skip an important configuration step or forget to securely record access credentials.
Avoid common network switch and router deployment errors by meticulously approaching each installation and using the following checklist, written by Erik Eckel for TechRepublic Premium.

STEPS FOR SUCCESS
Start by reviewing equipment received from the manufacturer and confirm the hardware specifications match those ordered. When preparing to deploy a router that also provides VPN services, also confirm the proper VPN licensing is received and associated with the device. Next, record the new material’s serial number for safekeeping. Then affix an asset tag to the hardware.
Before proceeding further, begin creating a dedicated documentation configuration file for the switches and/or router being deployed. Collect all the related installation, configuration, and settings information within this single file and ensure the information is securely stored for reference purposes. Capture everything from login credentials to network settings, to specific port and service configurations.
